Each part is scored from 0 to 100 on a fixed outside scale. Acclaim comes from published expert lists, launch reviews and awards; the more acclaimed a car, the less its ownership cost counts in this all-time score (its dollars below are unchanged). A part marked not measured carries no weight for this car, and the others share its weight.

Long-term value, shown and not scored

20 prices from sources that allow this use (classiccars.com, driveway.com), read October 27, 2026: the middle one is $82,497, about 112% of the price new (102% once the price new is put in today's dollars). Asking prices sit above what cars sell for.

Long-term value starts to count in the score once 75% of the 69 generations have permitted prices. Today 43 do.

The cost to own

About $2,818 a year to own ($1,870 to $4,652), about $12,439 over five years, bought at five years old or its own age if older, kept five years.

  1. Coolant tank and charge-air cooler leaks: about $41 over five years, possible (source)
  2. Carbon buildup (direct injection): about $20 over five years, possible (source)
  3. Infotainment software glitches: about $18 over five years, possible (source)

Expect about $1,900 to $4,700 a year; routine maintenance decides it; no known fault adds much. Ownership risk: moderate.

Best year to buy

2022The best year to buy, reading 89 of 100, about $2,818 a year to own.

Why the 2022

From our log of the changes between model years, each with its source. Only changes the score reads count as reasons; recalls BMW fixes for free, options and tuning notes do not. The cost a year is for a car bought at five years old, or its own age if older, kept five years. How the score works.

The longer answer

It is the most powerful M3 yet, and so far it has a good reliability record. Specialists describe the S58's crank hub as one piece, unlike the S55's two-piece hub that can slip, and no S58 hub slip has been documented, stock or tuned.

BMW twice stopped delivery of new cars over bearing shells, 2022 cars built July 13 to September 23, 2021 (SIB 11 07 21) and 2026 cars built October 16, 2025 to January 20, 2026 (SIB 11 01 26), without publishing a cause; no pattern of bearing wear has been reported since, so check by VIN that the work was done.

It comes as a rear-drive manual (473 hp) or as the Competition with an 8-speed automatic (503 hp), with optional M xDrive from the 2022 model year (523 hp from 2025). Polarizing front grille, but a serious performance and daily-driving package.

What to look for
  • Check by VIN that recalls and BMW campaigns are done: brake unit 21V-062 and seat belts 21V-554 on 2021 cars, the 25E-A03 engine software recall on cars built to January 2025, and the bearing shell campaign on 2026 cars built October 16, 2025 to January 20, 2026 (SIB 11 01 26); ask for the repair order
  • Confirm the latest iDrive software, full service history, clarity on any tuning, evidence of clean accident history, and desirable specs and colors
  • Decide between the purist RWD manual and the faster, more capable Competition xDrive

Holds value

  • RWD six-speed manual for purists
  • M xDrive for all-weather capability
  • The 2024 M3 CS and the 2027 M3 CS Handschalter (manual)
  • M Carbon Bucket Seats
  • Carbon ceramic brakes
  • Signature colors like Isle of Man Green and Sao Paulo Yellow
  • Paints from BMW Individual
  • Low documented mileage
  • Completed recalls
  • Full records

Hurts resale

  • High mileage
  • Accident or salvage history
  • Undocumented heavy tuning
  • Common colors
  • Missing service records
  • Open recalls
