Brake squeal
Aggressive M compound pads and rocks lodging between rotor and dust shield cause loud screech when stopping.
How to check
Normal for M cars; confirm it is pad noise and not a worn or warped rotor.

The G80 is the sixth-gen M3, sold in the US from the 2021 model year with the S58 twin-turbo inline-six.

Each part is scored from 0 to 100 on a fixed outside scale. Acclaim comes from published expert lists, launch reviews and awards; the more acclaimed a car, the less its ownership cost counts in this all-time score (its dollars below are unchanged). A part marked not measured carries no weight for this car, and the others share its weight.
20 prices from sources that allow this use (classiccars.com, driveway.com), read October 27, 2026: the middle one is $82,497, about 112% of the price new (102% once the price new is put in today's dollars). Asking prices sit above what cars sell for.
Long-term value starts to count in the score once 75% of the 69 generations have permitted prices. Today 43 do.
About $2,818 a year to own ($1,870 to $4,652), about $12,439 over five years, bought at five years old or its own age if older, kept five years.
Expect about $1,900 to $4,700 a year; routine maintenance decides it; no known fault adds much. Ownership risk: moderate.

2022The best year to buy, reading 89 of 100, about $2,818 a year to own.
From our log of the changes between model years, each with its source. Only changes the score reads count as reasons; recalls BMW fixes for free, options and tuning notes do not. The cost a year is for a car bought at five years old, or its own age if older, kept five years. How the score works.
It is the most powerful M3 yet, and so far it has a good reliability record. Specialists describe the S58's crank hub as one piece, unlike the S55's two-piece hub that can slip, and no S58 hub slip has been documented, stock or tuned.
BMW twice stopped delivery of new cars over bearing shells, 2022 cars built July 13 to September 23, 2021 (SIB 11 07 21) and 2026 cars built October 16, 2025 to January 20, 2026 (SIB 11 01 26), without publishing a cause; no pattern of bearing wear has been reported since, so check by VIN that the work was done.
It comes as a rear-drive manual (473 hp) or as the Competition with an 8-speed automatic (503 hp), with optional M xDrive from the 2022 model year (523 hp from 2025). Polarizing front grille, but a serious performance and daily-driving package.

Review service records, look for coolant residue around the expansion tank, and ask about low-coolant warnings and track use.

Screen blackouts, audio cutting out and phone connection drops are reported; software updates fix most. 2021 and 2022 cars run iDrive 7; 2023 and later cars have iDrive 8 on the Curved Display.
Confirm the latest iDrive software is installed. A software annoyance, not a hardware failure.
Like any direct-injection engine, the S58 can build carbon on the intake valves at high mileage; no pattern has been reported yet.
On high-mileage cars, ask whether the intake valves have been cleaned (walnut blasting).
Parts sellers report seam leaks from the S58's coolant expansion tank and, less often, leaks from the water-cooled charge-air cooler. Watch for low-coolant warnings, and watch temperatures on tracked cars.

BMW says its first fully electric M cars, on the Neue Klasse, arrive from 2027 with four motors, one per wheel, and previewed them with the M Concept Neue Klasse in June 2026; the press reports it as the electric M3. The head of BMW M has since said on record that a gas M3 follows, and that it will not be a plug-in hybrid.
The M3 traces back to the E30 in 1986. From the E36 onward a sedan body was offered alongside the coupe, and from the F80 the M3 is sedan only, the coupe split off as the M4.
