What does LCI mean?
LCI stands for Life Cycle Impulse, BMW's name for the mid-cycle refresh a model receives roughly halfway through its production run. Enthusiasts shorten it to pre-LCI (before the refresh) and post-LCI (after). The chassis code stays the same, the car underneath often does not, which is why this guide scores pre and post LCI cars as separate entries.
What typically changes at an LCI
Lights and fascias
New headlight and taillight designs are the visual tell, plus revised bumpers and grille treatments.
Cabin tech
Often the biggest real-world difference: newer iDrive versions, larger or curved displays, and updated driver assistance.
Drivetrain updates
Sometimes meaningful: power bumps, added 48V mild-hybrid systems, or running changes that quietly fix early-production issues.
Fixes you can't see
Mid-cycle cars often benefit from revised components where early builds had teething problems, which is exactly the kind of difference a buyer should know about.
Why buyers should care
Two cars with the same chassis code can differ in engine output, infotainment generation, standard equipment, and known-issue status, while looking nearly identical in a listing photo.
Prices usually reflect the difference; sellers occasionally hope you don't know it exists. Knowing which side of the LCI a car sits on is one of the cheapest pieces of leverage in the entire buying process.
Real examples from this guide
M340i, G20
The 2023 facelift brought sharper headlights with inverted L daytime running lights, a revised grille, and the jump from iDrive 7 to iDrive 8 on the Curved Display, plus a 48V mild hybrid on the B58. Some buyers prefer the pre-LCI cabin's physical climate controls, which is a real taste split, not a spec sheet one.
M440i, G22
The 2025 refresh added redesigned LED headlights, standard laser taillights (the quickest visual tell), a matte chrome grille surround, iDrive OS 8.5, and a small bump to about 386 hp with the 48V system.
M550i, G30
The 2021 facelift is a case study in why LCI matters twice over: sharper styling and bigger screens, but also the pre-LCI era itself split mid-run when the 2020 model year jumped from 456 to 523 hp. Model year knowledge pays for itself here.
The M4 and M3 (G82, G80) had lighter refreshes in this window, headlight and trim revisions rather than drivetrain changes, which is why the guide treats them as single entries. Where a facelift meaningfully changes the buying decision, it gets its own entry and its own scores.
How the guide handles it
Pre and post LCI versions are scored as separate generations with their own listings, known issues, photos, and scores, and every entry's "what changed" section spells out the facelift differences. See the methodology for how the scores work, or browse every generation.
