The longer answer

A motor on each axle gives up to 593 hp with the Boost paddle or launch control, enough for 60 mph in 3.7 seconds, and rear-wheel steering, adaptive dampers with rear air springs, multicontour seats and Bowers & Wilkins sound are standard.

Its 84.3 kWh (usable) battery charges at up to 205 kW; the EPA rated 2024 and 2025 cars at 239 to 256 miles, and 259 to 277 from 2026, after BMW fitted more efficient silicon carbide inverters to the i5 range.

It cost $85,095 with destination at launch and has lost value quickly; the high-voltage battery is covered for 8 years or 100,000 miles, and 2024 and 2025 cars carry an integrated brake unit recall among others.

What to look for. A battery health report from a BMW dealer (on 2025 cars the dashboard's battery health figure can read 100% until a software fix), the warranty start date (the battery is covered for 8 years or 100,000 miles), a VIN check showing the brake unit (24V-104 and 24V-739), air-conditioning wiring (26V-096) and drive-software (25V-395, cars built in 2023) recalls done, plus the smaller steering-wheel sensor, steering spindle and pedestrian warning sound (23V-885, 2024 cars) recalls, a dealer check for open service campaigns, a firm, consistent brake pedal with no brake or stability warnings, no whine or grinding from the rear, a DC fast-charge test at a public charger, even wear on the rear tires, and BMW Certified cover on cars under 60,000 miles.
