Each part is scored from 0 to 100 on a fixed outside scale. Acclaim comes from published expert lists, launch reviews and awards; the more acclaimed a car, the less its ownership cost counts in this all-time score (its dollars below are unchanged). A part marked not measured carries no weight for this car, and the others share its weight.
Long-term value, shown and not scored
12 prices from sources that allow this use (classiccars.com, driveway.com), read October 27, 2026: the middle one is $84,146, about 63% of the price new (48% once the price new is put in today's dollars). Asking prices sit above what cars sell for.
Long-term value starts to count in the score once 75% of the 69 generations have permitted prices. Today 43 do.
The cost to own
About $3,847 a year to own ($2,311 to $5,715), about $18,210 over five years, bought at five years old or its own age if older, kept five years.
Oil and coolant leaks around the hot vee (S63): about $840 over five years, common (source)
Coolant tank leak onto the fuel injectors (S63): about $0 over five years, common (source)
Expect about $2,300 to $5,700 a year; the bill that decides it is oil and coolant leaks around the hot vee. Ownership risk: costly.

Best year to buy
2025The best year to buy, reading 77 of 100, about $3,847 a year to own.
No logged change between model years sets it apart; every year reads within 2 points of it, so buy on condition and records.
No year to think twice about: none reads 3 or more points below the 2025, and no logged fault separates them.
From our log of the changes between model years, each with its source. Only changes the score reads count as reasons; recalls BMW fixes for free, options and tuning notes do not. The cost a year is for a car bought at five years old, or its own age if older, kept five years. How the score works.
Thelongeranswer
For 2020 each body came as a 600 hp M8 or a 617 hp M8 Competition, and BMW sold 50 Gran Coupe First Editions here; for 2021 only the Gran Coupe was imported, and from 2022 every US M8 was a 617 hp Competition, facelifted for 2023.
It is very fast and loses value quickly: a 2020 M8 coupe that listed at $133,000 is worth about $54,000 by Kelley Blue Book's figures. Its documented fault is a coolant expansion tank that can leak onto the fuel injectors, and BMW covers the fix on many cars, so check the campaign and the injector coverage by VIN.
What to look for. A VIN check at a BMW dealer for the coolant expansion tank campaign and the fuel injector coverage program, no low-coolant warnings, coolant smell or misfires, proof the 2020 transmission wiring harness recall was done, no oil or coolant seepage around the top of the engine, tread and brake life left (carbon ceramic rotors cost thousands to replace), a clean fault-code scan, and proof the car has not been tuned.

Transmission wiring harness recall (2020 cars)
3,012 2019 and 2020 M5s and 2020 M8s were recalled (NHTSA 19V883000) because the transmission wiring harness could be damaged and short-circuit, which can shift the gearbox into neutral and cut drive. Dealers reroute and secure the harness and replace it if it is damaged, free of charge.
How to check
Run the VIN through NHTSA or a BMW dealer and ask for proof the recall work was done.

Medium severity
Oil and coolant leaks around the hot vee (S63)
The turbochargers sit inside the V of the engine, and years of heat harden the gaskets, the turbo oil and coolant lines and the plastic cooling parts around them. It is an age item on every S63 rather than a documented M8 pattern, and the oldest cars are only now reaching the mileage where it shows. Repairs run from about $1,500 for gaskets to several thousand dollars for turbo lines, which mean removing the intake and often the turbos.
How to check
Look under the engine cover and beneath the car for wet oil or dried coolant, check for a burning-oil or coolant smell after a drive, and ask what seals or lines have been replaced.

Higher running costs: brakes and tires
The standard M Compound brakes use 395 mm front rotors with six-piston calipers, and genuine BMW front pads alone cost about $700, so a full pad and rotor job runs a few thousand dollars. The optional M Carbon Ceramic Brakes ($8,150 new in 2020) last longer, but aftermarket replacement discs for the related F90 M5 start at about $6,100 before pads and labor. The star-marked 20-inch summer tires cost about $1,800 to $1,900 a set before fitting.
How to check
Check tread depth and the tire date codes, look at the rotor lips and pad thickness, and on carbon ceramic cars ask a dealer to measure rotor wear before you buy.

Coolant tank leak onto the fuel injectors (S63)
BMW's bulletins say the plastic coolant expansion tank can leak over the car's life, and because it sits almost directly above the fuel injectors on cylinders 5 to 8, the coolant can corrode them until they fail, bringing rough running, misfires or limp mode. Under an emissions recall (24E-A01, SIB 17 03 24) on M8s built through September 2022, a dealer checks the tank's part number, replaces an early or leaking tank and replaces any contaminated injectors, free; a coverage program pays for injectors that fail from this corrosion for 15 years or 150,000 miles on 2020 coupes and convertibles and 2020 to 2021 Gran Coupes (SIB 01 17 24). Out of coverage, a new tank costs about $210 and each injector about $150 to $500 before labor.
How to check
Have a BMW dealer check the VIN for the open tank recall and the injector coverage, look for dried coolant around the tank and the top of the engine, and scan for misfire codes on cylinders 5 to 8.
