Each part is scored from 0 to 100 on a fixed outside scale. Acclaim comes from published expert lists, launch reviews and awards; the more acclaimed a car, the less its ownership cost counts in this all-time score (its dollars below are unchanged). A part marked not measured carries no weight for this car, and the others share its weight.

Long-term value, shown and not scored

No permitted price yet: we have not found three prices for this car from sources that allow this use.

Long-term value starts to count in the score once 75% of the 69 generations have permitted prices. Today 43 do.

The cost to own

About $2,118 a year to own ($1,488 to $3,259), about $9,792 over five years, bought at five years old or its own age if older, kept five years.

  1. Oil pump failure (B58, 2020 to 2021 cars): about $910 over five years, common (source)
  2. Oil filter housing and valve cover gasket leaks: about $516 over five years, common (source)
  3. High pressure fuel pump: about $130 over five years, possible (source)

Expect about $1,500 to $3,300 a year; the bills that decide it are oil pump failure, oil filter housing and valve cover gasket leaks and high pressure fuel pump. Ownership risk: moderate.

Best year to buy

2022The best year to buy, reading 70 of 100, about $1,995 a year to own.

Why the 2022

  • 2021 and 2022 cars: Revised oil pump (the ZTK part with metal internals) supersedes the plastic-housing pump that failed on early B58 TU cars (source, read October 27, 2026)

  • 2020: 67, 3 points below the 2022. About $2,118 a year to own against $1,995, with oil pump failure (B58, 2020 to 2021 cars) (about $910 over five years, price source) among the bills that decide it; chance of a bill over $10,000 in five years under 0.1%.
  • If you can only find a 2020: it reads 67, 3 points below the 2022, at about $2,118 a year to own against $1,995. The parts that differ: ownership 57 against 65. It is judged as bought at 6 years old, against 5 for the 2022. From our log of the changes between model years, each with its source. Only changes the score reads count as reasons; recalls BMW fixes for free, options and tuning notes do not. The cost a year is for a car bought at five years old, or its own age if older, kept five years. How the score works.

The longer answer

Available RWD or xDrive, 8-speed automatic only; a 48V mild hybrid was added for the 2021 model year. The default cross-shop against the Mercedes C43 and the Audi S4.

What to look for
  • Full service history, walnut blasting status on higher mileage cars, clean accident record, latest iDrive 7 firmware, and desirable options: Adaptive M suspension, Harman Kardon, the Premium or Executive Package (the M Sport differential is standard)
  • Check by VIN that recalls and service actions are done: brake-assist software, the starter motor and steering tie rods on 2020 cars, the coolant pump on cars built September 2020 to May 2021 (SI B11 05 21), and seat belts on 2021 cars
  • BMW covers the EVAP purge valve for 15 years or 150,000 miles if it fails (SI B01 03 24); a dealer confirms the cover by VIN
  • On cars built to October 2021, BMW also covers the lower active air flap in the front grille for 15 years or 150,000 miles (SI B01 03 25); not every car built then is included, so check by VIN

Holds value

  • Adaptive M suspension
  • Harman Kardon
  • The Executive or Premium Package
  • Portimao Blue or the BMW Individual Dravit Grey and Tanzanite Blue II (2021 and 2022)
  • Low documented mileage

Hurts resale

  • High mileage
  • Accident history
  • Missing records
  • Common color
  • Undocumented tuning
