Each part is scored from 0 to 100 on a fixed outside scale. Acclaim comes from published expert lists, launch reviews and awards; the more acclaimed a car, the less its ownership cost counts in this all-time score (its dollars below are unchanged). A part marked not measured carries no weight for this car, and the others share its weight.

Long-term value, shown and not scored

8 prices from sources that allow this use (driveway.com), read October 27, 2026: the middle one is $57,523, about 99% of the price new (92% once the price new is put in today's dollars). Asking prices sit above what cars sell for.

Long-term value starts to count in the score once 75% of the 69 generations have permitted prices. Today 43 do.

The cost to own

About $1,995 a year to own ($1,364 to $3,135), about $8,731 over five years, bought at five years old or its own age if older, kept five years.

  1. Oil filter housing and valve cover gasket leaks: about $413 over five years, common (source)
  2. High pressure fuel pump: about $104 over five years, possible (source)
  3. Coolant loss / expansion tank (B58): about $85 over five years, possible (source)

Expect about $1,400 to $3,100 a year; the bills that decide it are oil filter housing and valve cover gasket leaks, high pressure fuel pump and coolant loss / expansion tank. Ownership risk: low.

Best year to buy

2026The best year to buy, reading 66 of 100, about $1,986 a year to own.

Why the 2026

  • 2025 and 2026 cars: B58B30M2 engine revision (386 hp, 48V) (source, read October 27, 2026)

No year to think twice about: none reads 3 or more points below the 2026, and no logged fault separates them.

  1. 202365$1,995 a year
  2. 202466$1,995 a year
  3. 202566$1,986 a year
  4. 202666best year

From our log of the changes between model years, each with its source. Only changes the score reads count as reasons; recalls BMW fixes for free, options and tuning notes do not. The cost a year is for a car bought at five years old, or its own age if older, kept five years. How the score works.

The longer answer

The 48V mild hybrid carries over from the 2021 and 2022 cars.

The drivetrain is the pre-LCI car's for 2023 and 2024; the 2025 update brought a revised six with port injection, 386 hp and 398 lb-ft, plus iDrive 8.5.

What to look for
  • Walnut blasting on higher-mileage 2023 and 2024 cars (the 2025 engine adds port injection), full service history, up-to-date iDrive 8 (2023, 2024) or 8.5 (2025 on) software (iDrive 8 is a love or hate point), no accident history, working Curved Display
  • Check by VIN that recalls are done
  • On 2023 and 2024 cars, BMW covers the EVAP purge valve for 15 years or 150,000 miles if it fails (SI B01 03 24); a dealer confirms the cover by VIN

Holds value

  • Low mileage
  • Complete records
  • Harman Kardon
  • The Shadowline or Premium Package
  • 2025 and later cars for the 386 hp engine
  • Desirable colors

Hurts resale

  • Accident history
  • High mileage on a newer car
  • Common color
  • IDrive 8 issues
