Each part is scored from 0 to 100 on a fixed outside scale. Acclaim comes from published expert lists, launch reviews and awards; the more acclaimed a car, the less its ownership cost counts in this all-time score (its dollars below are unchanged). A part marked not measured carries no weight for this car, and the others share its weight.

Long-term value, shown and not scored

3 prices from sources that allow this use (driveway.com), read October 27, 2026: the middle one is $44,153, about 40% of the price new (30% once the price new is put in today's dollars). Asking prices sit above what cars sell for.

Long-term value starts to count in the score once 75% of the 69 generations have permitted prices. Today 43 do.

The cost to own

About $3,031 a year to own ($2,033 to $4,565), about $14,189 over five years, bought at five years old or its own age if older, kept five years.

  1. Oil and coolant leaks (hot vee): about $407 over five years, common (source)
  2. Valve stem seals (older or tracked): about $372 over five years, possible (source)
  3. Fuel injectors corroded by coolant (N63, 2019 to 2021 cars): about $0 over five years, common (source)

Expect about $2,000 to $4,600 a year; the bills that decide it are oil and coolant leaks and valve stem seals. Ownership risk: moderate.

Best year to buy

2019The best year to buy, reading 66 of 100, about $3,031 a year to own.

No logged change between model years sets it apart; every year reads within 2 points of it, so buy on condition and records.

No year to think twice about: none reads 3 or more points below the 2019, and no logged fault separates them.

The longer answer

Flagship grand tourer looks and V8 sound for well under M8 money, strong depreciation makes used examples a value. It uses the improved TU3 N63, not the troubled early engine, but oil consumption and running costs still need watching.

What to look for
  • Oil consumption history, cooling system status (this is a hot V8 in a long body), full service records preferably with 5k to 7.5k mi oil intervals, no accident history, desirable Individual options
  • Check by VIN that recalls are done (the fuel pump flange on 2019 cars, the brake unit on 2020 and 2021 cars)
  • Cars built before late February 2021 have 15-year, 150,000-mile cover for injectors corroded by coolant
  • On 2019 and 2020 cars BMW covers the engine coolant thermostat for 15 years or 150,000 miles (SI B01 01 21); a dealer can confirm it by VIN

Holds value

  • Bowers and Wilkins Diamond audio
  • M Carbon Exterior
  • Individual paint
  • Low documented mileage

Hurts resale

  • Accident history
  • Very high mileage
  • Missing oil change records
  • Common color on this flagship
