Each part is scored from 0 to 100 on a fixed outside scale. Acclaim comes from published expert lists, launch reviews and awards; the more acclaimed a car, the less its ownership cost counts in this all-time score (its dollars below are unchanged). A part marked not measured carries no weight for this car, and the others share its weight.

Long-term value, shown and not scored

No permitted price yet: we have not found three prices for this car from sources that allow this use.

Long-term value starts to count in the score once 75% of the 69 generations have permitted prices. Today 43 do.

The cost to own

About $3,058 a year to own ($1,952 to $4,732), about $14,210 over five years, bought at five years old or its own age if older, kept five years.

  1. Turbocharger wastegate wear (N74): about $480 over five years, possible (source)
  2. Air suspension strut leaks: about $0 over five years, common (source)

Expect about $2,000 to $4,700 a year; the bill that decides it is turbocharger wastegate wear. Ownership risk: moderate.

Best year to buy

2022The best year to buy, reading 60 of 100, about $3,058 a year to own.

No logged change between model years sets it apart; every year reads within 2 points of it, so buy on condition and records.

No year to think twice about: none reads 3 or more points below the 2022, and no logged fault separates them.

From our log of the changes between model years, each with its source. Only changes the score reads count as reasons; recalls BMW fixes for free, options and tuning notes do not. The cost a year is for a car bought at five years old, or its own age if older, kept five years. How the score works.

The longer answer

Its N74 twin-turbo 6.6-liter V12 makes 601 hp, with torque raised from 590 to 627 lb-ft for the 2020 facelift that brought the larger grille, and BMW USA closed the run with The Final V12, 12 cars for US customers. Air suspension, rear-wheel steering and active anti-roll bars are standard.

It loses value fast, so a 2018 M760i that listed at about $158,000 is worth about $34,000 by Kelley Blue Book's figures, while its parts and labor still cost what a V12 flagship costs. BMW extended the warranty on its air struts to 8 years or 80,000 miles, so check that coverage and the recall history by VIN.

What to look for. A VIN check for the air strut warranty extension and, on 2017 to 2019 cars, the grille air flap extension, proof the 2017 and 2018 oil cooler line recall was done, a car that sits level overnight with no suspension warnings, no rattle from the turbos on a cold start or when lifting off, no oil or coolant leaks, a clean fault-code scan, and oil services on time in the records.

Holds value

  • 2020 to 2022 facelift cars
  • The Final V12 (12 US cars)
  • BMW Individual paints such as Tanzanite Blue II, Azurite Black and Aventurin Red
  • The Rear Executive Lounge Seating Package
  • Bowers & Wilkins sound
  • Low documented mileage with full records
  • Unmodified cars

Hurts resale

  • High mileage
  • Accident history
  • Missing service records
  • Air suspension faults
  • Turbo rattle or leaks
  • Open recalls
  • Aftermarket tunes
