The short answer

The XM is BMW M's first stand-alone model since the M1 and its first plug-in hybrid, a large SUV built in South Carolina and sold here for the 2023 to 2026 model years.

Each part is scored from 0 to 100 on a fixed outside scale. Acclaim comes from published expert lists, launch reviews and awards; the more acclaimed a car, the less its ownership cost counts in this all-time score (its dollars below are unchanged). A part marked not measured carries no weight for this car, and the others share its weight.

Long-term value, shown and not scored

5 prices from sources that allow this use (classiccars.com, driveway.com), read October 27, 2026: the middle one is $78,998, about 50% of the price new (44% once the price new is put in today's dollars). Asking prices sit above what cars sell for.

Long-term value starts to count in the score once 75% of the 69 generations have permitted prices. Today 43 do.

The cost to own

About $5,644 a year to own ($3,224 to $10,050), about $26,362 over five years, bought at five years old or its own age if older, kept five years.

  1. Hybrid drive faults and false warning lights: about $180 over five years, possible, priced from its severity class (no sourced price of its own) (source)
  2. Active front anti-roll bar spring (2024 cars): about $144 over five years, possible, priced from its severity class (no sourced price of its own) (source)
  3. Carbon buildup on the intake valves (S68): about $120 over five years, possible (source)

Expect about $3,200 to $10,100 a year; the bills that decide it are hybrid drive faults and false warning lights, active front anti-roll bar spring and carbon buildup on the intake valves. Ownership risk: high.

Best year to buy

2026The best year to buy, reading 46 of 100, about $5,632 a year to own.

No logged change between model years sets it apart; every year reads within 2 points of it, so buy on condition and records.

No year to think twice about: none reads 3 or more points below the 2026, and no logged fault separates them.

From our log of the changes between model years, each with its source. Only changes the score reads count as reasons; recalls BMW fixes for free, options and tuning notes do not. The cost a year is for a car bought at five years old, or its own age if older, kept five years. How the score works.

The longer answer

It pairs the S68 twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 with an electric motor in the eight-speed automatic for 644 hp and 590 lb-ft; the 738 hp Label Red arrived for 2024, later sold as the XM Label, and for 2026 it is the only XM sold here. It weighs about 6,060 lb, has about 30 miles of EPA-rated electric range, and its M xDrive all-wheel drive has no rear-drive-only mode.

In iSeeCars' figures it lost value faster than any other M car over its first three years, and a 2023 XM that cost about $160,000 new was valued at about $60,000 by Kelley Blue Book in October 2026. BMW has already issued campaigns, software fixes and a 15-year warranty extension for its hybrid parts, so check each one by VIN.

What to look for. A VIN check for the integrated brake unit recalls (three campaigns on the same part) and for open campaigns such as the active front anti-roll bar and the battery electronics, the 15-year warranty extension on the high-voltage battery cooling valves (2023 and early 2024 builds), proof the software is at BMW's current level, no stored hybrid, charging or drivetrain fault codes, wheels checked for cracks and tires for wear, no knocking from the front suspension, and how much of the 4-year, 50,000-mile warranty and the 8-year high-voltage battery warranty remains.

Holds value

  • The 738 hp Label Red and XM Label
  • Low documented mileage with warranty left
  • Toronto Red
  • Cape York Green
  • Marina Bay Blue and BMW Individual paints
  • Deep Lagoon or Silverstone with Vintage Coffee leather
  • Unmodified cars

Hurts resale

  • High mileage
  • Accident history
  • Open recalls or campaigns
  • Hybrid or drivetrain warnings that keep coming back
  • Cracked or repaired wheels
  • Worn tires
  • Missing service records
  • Aftermarket modifications
