Inspection checklist
XM G09, 2023 to 2026
Before you go
- Open recalls. Run the VIN through NHTSA or a BMW dealer and ask for proof every recall was done.
- History report. Check the title, accidents, owners and mileage record.
- Service records. Ask for them in advance, ideally from a BMW dealer or specialist.
- Certified or not. BMW can still certify 2023 to 2026 cars. If this one is certified, ask for the paperwork showing when its cover ends.
- Independent inspection. Book a pre-purchase inspection with a shop that knows this engine.
Known problems on this car
- Hybrid drive faults and false warning lights
Ask a BMW dealer to confirm the software level and scan for stored hybrid, charging and drivetrain faults, drive the car in electric and hybrid modes, and charge it on a Level 2 charger before you buy.
- High-voltage battery cooling valves and battery electronics
Ask a BMW dealer whether the VIN shows the extended valve coverage or an open battery electronics campaign, and scan for fault 21F110.
- Active front anti-roll bar spring 2024 cars
Ask a BMW dealer whether the campaign is open or done, and listen for knocks or clunks from the front over bumps and in slow full-lock turns.
- Carbon buildup on the intake valves about $1,000 to fix
Listen for a rough idle and scan for misfire codes, and on higher-mileage cars ask whether the valves have been cleaned.
- Cracked wheels and fast tire wear about $3,200 to fix
Inspect every wheel barrel for cracks or repairs, check tread depth and the date codes on all four tires, and ask whether the car holds its tire pressures.
At the viewing
- A VIN check for the integrated brake unit recalls (three campaigns on the same part) and for open campaigns such as the active front anti-roll bar and the battery electronics.
- The 15-year warranty extension on the high-voltage battery cooling valves (2023 and early 2024 builds).
- Proof the software is at BMW's current level.
- No stored hybrid.
- Charging or drivetrain fault codes.
- Wheels checked for cracks and tires for wear.
- No knocking from the front suspension.
- How much of the 4-year.
- 50,000-mile warranty and the 8-year high-voltage battery warranty remains.
Recalls to confirm
- Integrated brake unit recall 2023 and 2024 cars
Run the VIN through NHTSA or a BMW dealer and ask for proof that every brake recall on it has been completed.
