Each part is scored from 0 to 100 on a fixed outside scale. Acclaim comes from published expert lists, launch reviews and awards; the more acclaimed a car, the less its ownership cost counts in this all-time score (its dollars below are unchanged). A part marked not measured carries no weight for this car, and the others share its weight.

Long-term value, shown and not scored

11 prices from sources that allow this use (driveway.com), read October 27, 2026: the middle one is $32,683, about 58% of the price new (45% once the price new is put in today's dollars). Asking prices sit above what cars sell for.

Long-term value starts to count in the score once 75% of the 69 generations have permitted prices. Today 43 do.

The cost to own

About $2,347 a year to own ($1,453 to $3,567), about $10,554 over five years, bought at five years old or its own age if older, kept five years.

  1. Oil filter housing and valve cover gasket leaks (B58): about $413 over five years, common (source)
  2. Rear differential mounting bolt: about $84 over five years, possible (source)
  3. Coolant loss (B58): about $47 over five years, possible (source)

Expect about $1,500 to $3,600 a year; the bills that decide it are oil filter housing and valve cover gasket leaks and rear differential mounting bolt. Ownership risk: moderate.

From our log of the changes between model years, each with its source. Only changes the score reads count as reasons; recalls BMW fixes for free, options and tuning notes do not. The cost a year is for a car bought at five years old, or its own age if older, kept five years. How the score works.

The longer answer

It made 355 hp for 2018 and 2019 and 382 hp from 2020, and the 2022 update brought a facelift and a 48-volt mild-hybrid system.

It is one of the easiest M Performance models to shop, with about 670 for sale on CarGurus in May 2026, and a car up to five years old with under 60,000 miles can be sold as BMW Certified. The known fault to check for is the engine oil pump on 2020 and 2021 cars; the rear differential bolt that troubles the X3 M is rarely reported on this car.

Also check whether the crankcase valve (2018 and 2019 cars) and the EVAP purge valve are covered by BMW's 15-year warranty extensions, and look for oil filter housing leaks, the subject of a proposed 2026 class action.

What to look for
  • A VIN check for open recalls (the 2020 brake assist software update, the rear brake caliper recall on 2018 and 2019 cars, and the cargo rail fix on 2018 to 2023 cars), an electronic oil level check in iDrive that completes (on 2020 and 2021 cars one that stalls at 15 to 30 percent is usually a software fault BMW fixes with an update, SIB 11 04 26; if it still will not finish, have the oil pressure checked), any record of oil pump replacement, no low oil pressure or drivetrain warnings in the history, no clunk from the rear when shifting between drive and reverse, no low-coolant warnings or dried coolant around the expansion tank, no oil weeping at the valve cover or oil filter housing, oil changes on time, and how much factory or BMW Certified warranty is left
  • BMW covers the EVAP purge valve for 15 years or 150,000 miles if it fails (SI B01 03 24); a dealer confirms the cover by VIN
  • On 2018 and 2019 cars, ask whether the crankcase valve was replaced under its 15-year warranty (SI B01 14 23)
  • On those 2018 and 2019 cars, BMW's 15-year, 150,000-mile covers also take in the fuel vapor leak diagnosis module (SI B01 09 21) and the grille's active air flaps (SI B01 12 19)

Holds value

  • 2022 to 2024 cars with warranty or BMW Certified cover left
  • The M Sport Differential
  • Adaptive M Suspension on 2018 to 2021 cars
  • Tanzanite Blue II
  • Phytonic Blue
  • Aventurin Red and Brooklyn Grey paint
  • Cognac or Mocha leather
  • The Premium and Executive Packages
  • Low documented mileage
  • Unmodified cars

Hurts resale

  • 2020 and 2021 cars with no record of oil pump work
  • High mileage with gaps in the service history
  • Accident history
  • Tuning
  • Open recalls
  • Worn tires and brakes
