The G01 X3 M40i was the first M Performance X3, built in South Carolina and sold here from 2018 to 2024 with the B58 3.0-liter turbo six, an eight-speed automatic and all-wheel drive.

It made 355 hp for 2018 and 2019 and 382 hp from 2020, and the 2022 update brought a facelift and a 48-volt mild-hybrid system.
It is one of the easiest M Performance models to shop, with about 670 for sale on CarGurus in May 2026, and a car up to five years old with under 60,000 miles can be sold as BMW Certified. The known fault to check for is the engine oil pump on 2020 and 2021 cars; the rear differential bolt that troubles the X3 M is rarely reported on this car.
Also check whether the crankcase valve (2018 and 2019 cars) and the EVAP purge valve are covered by BMW's 15-year warranty extensions, and look for oil filter housing leaks, the subject of a proposed 2026 class action.

Run the oil level check in iDrive. On 2020 and 2021 cars a check that stalls at 15 to 30 percent is usually a software fault BMW fixes with an update (SIB 11 04 26), so ask whether the update was done and, if the check still will not finish, have a BMW dealer or specialist check the oil pressure. Ask for an invoice if the pump has been replaced, and treat low oil pressure warnings in the history as a reason to walk away.
Look for oil or coolant residue at the oil filter housing and the valve cover, and ask about coolant top-ups.

The B58's coolant expansion tank can crack at its seams, and hoses and fittings around the engine can seep, so the loss is often slow: a low-coolant warning now and then. RepairPal puts a new tank at about $460 to $520.
Ask about low-coolant warnings and top-ups, and look for dried coolant around the expansion tank and hoses with the engine cold.
The plastic oil filter housing and its gaskets can leak oil or coolant, often from about 60,000 miles, and the valve cover gasket can weep. A proposed class action filed in January 2026 covers 2014 to 2021 X3s and X4s among other BMWs with this engine family (2018 to 2021 X3s are in the proposed class); BMW has moved to dismiss it, and no class has been certified. Both jobs take many hours of labor.

The crankcase ventilation (PCV) valve's diaphragm can split, bringing blue-white smoke after a cold start, a whistle at idle and cylinder 6 misfire codes. BMW covers the valve for 15 years or 150,000 miles on X3 M40is built July 2017 to July 2019 (SI B01 14 23).
Ask whether the valve was replaced under SI B01 14 23; within 15 years and 150,000 miles a BMW dealer fixes it free.
On the X3 M, the bolt through the rear differential's rubber mount is a known weak spot that can bend or snap. On this car it is rarely reported: one owner complaint to NHTSA describes a sheared differential mounting bolt on a 2019 X3 sDrive30i, and none of the 107 complaints filed for X3 M40is mentions it. If it does fail, it starts as a clunk and can end with a broken driveshaft and a damaged differential; an X3 M owner put that repair at nearly $5,000.
Listen for a clunk from the rear when shifting between drive and reverse and when going on and off the throttle at low speed, and ask whether the bolt has been replaced.
Certain 2020 X3 M40is were recalled (NHTSA 21V598000) because the engine software could cut brake assist while the engine starts. The brakes still work but need a much harder push. Dealers update the software free of charge.
On a 2020 car, run the VIN through NHTSA or a BMW dealer and ask for proof the update was done.
The B58's variable oil pump has a plastic ring inside that can crack, and oil pressure then becomes erratic or is lost, which can ruin the engine. BMW specialist BRR Performance says it affects the updated engine (B58TU) built from 2018 to 2022, most often after extreme cold or with oil thicker than the specified 0W-20, that BMW moved to a metal ring in 2022 engines, and that the first version of the engine does not seem to fail this way. The X3 M40i got the updated engine for 2020 (BMW's 2019 product guide lists the first version), so the risk sits with 2020 and 2021 cars and some early 2022 cars. Of the owner complaints to NHTSA that mention the pump, 17 are on 2020 and 2021 X3 M40is, many of them copies of one 2026 letter, and four on 2018 and 2019 cars. RepairPal puts the job at about $2,100 to $2,800 at an independent shop, and dealers quote more.
