Each part is scored from 0 to 100 on a fixed outside scale. Acclaim comes from published expert lists, launch reviews and awards; the more acclaimed a car, the less its ownership cost counts in this all-time score (its dollars below are unchanged). A part marked not measured carries no weight for this car, and the others share its weight.

Long-term value, shown and not scored

3 prices from sources that allow this use (classiccars.com, driveway.com), read October 27, 2026: the middle one is $55,495, about 94% of the price new (73% once the price new is put in today's dollars). Asking prices sit above what cars sell for.

Long-term value starts to count in the score once 75% of the 69 generations have permitted prices. Today 43 do.

The cost to own

About $2,410 a year to own ($1,678 to $3,770), about $11,378 over five years, bought at five years old or its own age if older, kept five years.

  1. Electric water pump and thermostat failure (N55): about $525 over five years, common (source)
  2. Oil pan gasket leak (N55): about $455 over five years, common (source)
  3. Rear differential mount knock: about $72 over five years, possible (source)

Expect about $1,700 to $3,800 a year; the bills that decide it are electric water pump and thermostat failure, oil pan gasket leak and rear differential mount knock. Ownership risk: moderate.

Best year to buy

2021The best year to buy, reading 92 of 100, about $2,326 a year to own.

Why the 2021

  • 2019 to 2021 cars: M2 Competition replaces the M2: the M4-derived S55 replaces the N55 (source, read October 27, 2026)
  • 2019 to 2021 cars: N55 electric water pump and oil pan gasket faults end with the N55; M4 track cooling (extra radiators, oil cooler) fitted (source, read October 27, 2026)

No year to think twice about: none reads 3 or more points below the 2021, and no logged fault separates them.

From our log of the changes between model years, each with its source. Only changes the score reads count as reasons; recalls BMW fixes for free, options and tuning notes do not. The cost a year is for a car bought at five years old, or its own age if older, kept five years. How the score works.

The longer answer

Sold in the US as 2016 to 2021 models, it started as the N55-powered "OG" M2 at 365 hp, then switched to the S55 engine for the 405 hp Competition and the limited, most-collectible 444 hp CS.

The OG is more reliable and analog; the Competition and CS are faster but carry the S55 crank hub concern. All three are in strong demand.

What to look for
  • First determine N55 (OG) vs S55 (Competition/CS), since that changes both value and the issue checklist
  • Full service history, tune clarity on S55 cars, crank hub status on tuned S55s, manual gearbox for collectibility, and desirable colors
  • The CS is a special-edition value anchor
  • Check by VIN that recalls are done: instrument panel software on 2018 cars (17V-719), knee air bags on 2019 and 2020 cars (19V-352) and seat belts on 2021 cars (21V-554)
  • On a 2016 car, look for wet fuel under the driver's side, where the tank's welded top plate can leak; BMW covers it for 15 years (SI B01 03 22)
Under $40,000? How to tell the N55 car from the S55 Competition

Under about $40,000 you are looking at a 2016 to 2018 car with the N55, the original M2; the S55 Competition (2019 to 2021) and the 2020 CS cost more. The model year settles which engine a US car has.

  • The model year: every US M2 from 2016 to 2018 has the 365 hp N55; from 2019 the Competition, with the 405 hp S55, replaced it, and the 2020 CS has a 444 hp S55.
  • The VIN: its 10th character is the model year, G for 2016, H for 2017 and J for 2018 (N55), K, L and M for 2019 to 2021 (S55). In the VINs we decoded with NHTSA's tool, characters 4 to 7 read 1H9C (2016 and 2017) or 1J5C (2018) on the original car, 2U7C on the Competition and 1J3C on the CS.
  • Under the hood: the N55 has one twin-scroll turbo; the S55 has two turbos, and the Competition has a carbon fiber strut brace across the engine bay, taken from the M3 and M4.
  • Outside and in: the Competition has larger kidney grille openings in gloss black, a dark M Competition badge on the trunk lid, an M2 Competition logo on the door sills and an M2 logo lit in the seat backs.
  • Badges and covers prove nothing on their own: the Competition badge is sold as a part and can be fitted to any M2, and the original car's "Powered by M" engine cover is shared with other N55 cars. Go by the VIN.
Sources and methodwhere each line comes from

Holds value

  • M2 CS (rare, top of the range)
  • Six-speed manual
  • Long Beach Blue and Misano Blue
  • Low documented mileage
  • Complete records
  • Competition over base for the S55. The OG manual is increasingly collectible in its own right

Hurts resale

  • High mileage
  • Accident history
  • Undocumented heavy tuning on S55 cars
  • Common colors
  • Missing records
  • DCT for purists
