The M235i xDrive Gran Coupe was the first four-door 2 Series, sold here from 2020 to 2024 on BMW's front-drive-based compact platform, shared with the X1 and X2 of those years.

Each part is scored from 0 to 100 on a fixed outside scale. Acclaim comes from published expert lists, launch reviews and awards; the more acclaimed a car, the less its ownership cost counts in this all-time score (its dollars below are unchanged). A part marked not measured carries no weight for this car, and the others share its weight.

Long-term value, shown and not scored

No permitted price yet: we have not found three prices for this car from sources that allow this use.

Long-term value starts to count in the score once 75% of the 69 generations have permitted prices. Today 43 do.

The cost to own

About $1,962 a year to own ($1,206 to $2,864), about $8,713 over five years, bought at five years old or its own age if older, kept five years.

  1. Oil filter housing and valve cover gasket leaks (B48): about $476 over five years, common (source)
  2. Coolant leaks (B48): about $115 over five years, possible (source)
  3. Intake valve carbon buildup (B48): about $72 over five years, possible (source)

Expect about $1,200 to $2,900 a year; the bills that decide it are oil filter housing and valve cover gasket leaks, coolant leaks and intake valve carbon buildup. Ownership risk: low.

Best year to buy

2024The best year to buy, reading 67 of 100, about $1,962 a year to own.

No logged change between model years sets it apart; every year reads within 2 points of it, so buy on condition and records.

No year to think twice about: none reads 3 or more points below the 2024, and no logged fault separates them.

From our log of the changes between model years, each with its source. Only changes the score reads count as reasons; recalls BMW fixes for free, options and tuning notes do not. The cost a year is for a car bought at five years old, or its own age if older, kept five years. How the score works.

The longer answer

Every US car has all-wheel drive, an eight-speed automatic and a high-output version of the B48 2.0-liter turbo four rated at 301 hp and 332 lb-ft, with a Torsen limited-slip differential at the front axle as standard.

There were no special editions. It is quick, but reviewers faulted its steering, stiff ride and front-biased handling, and Car and Driver ranked it last of three against the Mercedes-AMG A35 and Cadillac CT4-V. The engine's record is good so far; check for worn engine mounts, coolant loss and oil leaks, and how much warranty is left.

What to look for. Engine mounts (vibration at idle in Drive or a clunk when shifting between Drive and Reverse means worn mounts), no coolant loss or low-coolant warnings, no oil at the valve cover or oil filter housing, oil changes every 5,000 to 7,500 miles rather than BMW's 10,000, intake carbon cleaning on cars past about 60,000 miles, smooth shifts from a stop, a VIN check for open recalls (a sunroof closing fix on 2020 and 2021 cars and a seat belt retractor recall on cars built from November 2020 to February 2021), and how much factory or BMW Certified warranty is left.

Holds value

  • 2023 and 2024 cars with warranty or BMW Certified cover left
  • Misano Blue
  • Snapper Rocks Blue and Frozen Pure Grey paint
  • Magma Red leather
  • The Premium Package
  • Dynamic Damper Control
  • The 19in wheels with performance tires
  • Low documented mileage
  • Unmodified cars

Hurts resale

  • Tuned cars
  • Accident history
  • High mileage with gaps in the service records
  • Engine mount or coolant faults left alone
  • Worn run-flat tires
  • Open recalls
