Inspection checklist
M235i Gran Coupe F44, 2020 to 2024
Before you go
- Open recalls. Run the VIN through NHTSA or a BMW dealer and ask for proof every recall was done.
- History report. Check the title, accidents, owners and mileage record.
- Service records. Ask for them in advance, ideally from a BMW dealer or specialist.
- Certified or not. BMW can still certify 2022 to 2024 cars. If this one is certified, ask for the paperwork showing when its cover ends.
- Independent inspection. Book a pre-purchase inspection with a shop that knows this engine.
Known problems on this car
- Engine mount wear about $450 to fix
Feel for vibration through the seat at idle in Drive, listen for a clunk when shifting between Drive and Reverse, and look for mount replacement in the records.
- Coolant leaks about $1,200 to fix
Check the coolant level with the engine cold, look for low-coolant warnings in the history, and look for dried coolant around the hoses, the thermostat and the expansion tank.
- Oil filter housing and valve cover gasket leaks about $1,700 to fix
Look for oil or coolant residue at the oil filter housing and the valve cover, and ask about coolant top-ups.
- Intake valve carbon buildup about $600 to fix
On cars past about 60,000 miles, ask whether the intake valves have been cleaned, and check for a rough cold idle or stored misfire codes.
At the viewing
- Engine mounts (vibration at idle in Drive or a clunk when shifting between Drive and Reverse means worn mounts).
- No coolant loss or low-coolant warnings.
- No oil at the valve cover or oil filter housing.
- Oil changes every 5,000 to 7,500 miles rather than BMW's 10,000.
- Intake carbon cleaning on cars past about 60,000 miles.
- Smooth shifts from a stop.
- A VIN check for open recalls (a sunroof closing fix on 2020 and 2021 cars and a seat belt retractor recall on cars built from November 2020 to February 2021).
- How much factory or BMW Certified warranty is left.
