The short answer

The X2 M35i was BMW's first M Performance model with a four-cylinder engine, sold here from 2019 to 2022; BMW certified a 2023 version with the EPA, but Edmunds and KBB both report that it did not return for 2023.

Each part is scored from 0 to 100 on a fixed outside scale. Acclaim comes from published expert lists, launch reviews and awards; the more acclaimed a car, the less its ownership cost counts in this all-time score (its dollars below are unchanged). A part marked not measured carries no weight for this car, and the others share its weight.

Long-term value, shown and not scored

No permitted price yet: we have not found three prices for this car from sources that allow this use.

Long-term value starts to count in the score once 75% of the 69 generations have permitted prices. Today 43 do.

The cost to own

About $2,031 a year to own ($1,251 to $2,969), about $8,989 over five years, bought at five years old or its own age if older, kept five years.

  1. Oil filter housing and valve cover gasket leaks (B48): about $595 over five years, common (source)
  2. Coolant leaks (B48): about $144 over five years, possible (source)
  3. Intake valve carbon buildup (B48): about $72 over five years, possible (source)

Expect about $1,300 to $3,000 a year; the bills that decide it are oil filter housing and valve cover gasket leaks, coolant leaks and intake valve carbon buildup. Ownership risk: moderate.

Best year to buy

2022The best year to buy, reading 58 of 100, about $2,012 a year to own.

No logged change between model years sets it apart; every year reads within 2 points of it, so buy on condition and records.

No year to think twice about: none reads 3 or more points below the 2022, and no logged fault separates them.

From our log of the changes between model years, each with its source. Only changes the score reads count as reasons; recalls BMW fixes for free, options and tuning notes do not. The cost a year is for a car bought at five years old, or its own age if older, kept five years. How the score works.

The longer answer

It uses a high-output B48 2.0-liter turbo four rated at 302 hp and 332 lb-ft, an eight-speed automatic with a Torsen limited-slip differential for the front axle, and all-wheel drive, on the front-drive-based platform of the X1. There were no special editions. It is quick for its size, but reviewers were split over its stiff ride and what kind of car it is meant to be.

The engine's record is good; check the engine mounts, coolant and oil leaks, and intake carbon on higher-mileage cars.

What to look for. Engine mounts (vibration at idle in Drive or a clunk when shifting between Drive and Reverse means worn mounts), no coolant loss or low-coolant warnings, no oil at the valve cover or oil filter housing, oil changes every 5,000 to 7,500 miles rather than BMW's 10,000, intake carbon cleaning on cars past about 60,000 miles, a smooth pull-away with no long delay, a VIN check for open recalls (a seat belt retractor recall covers X2s built from December 2020 to January 2021), and tires in good shape.

Holds value

  • 2021 and 2022 cars
  • Misano Blue
  • Sunset Orange and Galvanic Gold paint
  • M Sport seats in Magma Red leather
  • Dynamic Damper Control
  • The Premium Package
  • Low documented mileage
  • Unmodified cars

Hurts resale

  • Tuned cars
  • Accident history
  • High mileage with gaps in the service records
  • Engine mount or coolant faults left alone
  • SensaTec seats for buyers who want leather
  • Open recalls
