Inspection checklist

X2 M35i F39, 2019 to 2022

Printed October 30, 2026. Tick each item at the viewing, and write down what you find.

Before you go

  • Open recalls. Run the VIN through NHTSA or a BMW dealer and ask for proof every recall was done.
  • History report. Check the title, accidents, owners and mileage record.
  • Service records. Ask for them in advance, ideally from a BMW dealer or specialist.
  • Certified or not. BMW can still certify 2022 cars. If this one is certified, ask for the paperwork showing when its cover ends.
  • Independent inspection. Book a pre-purchase inspection with a shop that knows this engine.

Known problems on this car

  • Engine mount wear about $350 to fix

Feel for vibration through the seat at idle in Drive, listen for a clunk when shifting between Drive and Reverse, and look for mount replacement in the records.

  • Coolant leaks about $1,200 to fix

Check the coolant level with the engine cold, look for low-coolant warnings in the history, and look for dried coolant around the hoses, the thermostat and the expansion tank.

  • Oil filter housing and valve cover gasket leaks about $1,700 to fix

Look for oil or coolant residue at the oil filter housing and the valve cover, and ask about coolant top-ups.

  • Intake valve carbon buildup about $600 to fix

On cars past about 60,000 miles, ask whether the intake valves have been cleaned, and check for a rough cold idle or stored misfire codes.

  • Hesitation pulling away about $470 to fix

Pull away from a stop several times, gently and briskly, with the engine warm, and ask whether the transmission fluid has ever been changed.

At the viewing

  • Engine mounts (vibration at idle in Drive or a clunk when shifting between Drive and Reverse means worn mounts).
  • No coolant loss or low-coolant warnings.
  • No oil at the valve cover or oil filter housing.
  • Oil changes every 5,000 to 7,500 miles rather than BMW's 10,000.
  • Intake carbon cleaning on cars past about 60,000 miles.
  • A smooth pull-away with no long delay.
  • A VIN check for open recalls (a seat belt retractor recall covers X2s built from December 2020 to January 2021).
  • Tires in good shape.
