The short answer

The E46 is the third M3, sold here from 2001 to 2006 as a coupe and a convertible, with the S54: a naturally aspirated 3.2-liter six that revs to 8,000 rpm and makes 333 hp.

Each part is scored from 0 to 100 on a fixed outside scale. Acclaim comes from published expert lists, launch reviews and awards; the more acclaimed a car, the less its ownership cost counts in this all-time score (its dollars below are unchanged). A part marked not measured carries no weight for this car, and the others share its weight.

Long-term value, shown and not scored

29 prices from sources that allow this use (classiccars.com, enthusiastauto.com), read October 27, 2026: the middle one is $54,990, about 106% of the price new (59% once the price new is put in today's dollars). Asking prices sit above what cars sell for.

Long-term value starts to count in the score once 75% of the 69 generations have permitted prices. Today 43 do.

The cost to own

About $2,715 a year to own ($1,845 to $4,131), about $13,552 over five years, bought at five years old or its own age if older, kept five years.

  1. Rear subframe mount cracking: about $1,225 over five years, common (source)
  2. VANOS wear: about $700 over five years, common (source)
  3. SMG hydraulic pump (SMG cars): about $384 over five years, possible (source)

Expect about $1,800 to $4,100 a year; the bills that decide it are rear subframe mount cracking, VANOS wear and SMG hydraulic pump. Ownership risk: moderate.

Why the 2006

  • Spared a fault of the 2001 to 2003 cars: Substandard rod bearings in cars built 2/2001 to 5/2003; BMW service action replaced them and extended the engine warranty to 6 years or 100,000 miles (long expired) (source, read October 27, 2026)

Years to think twice about

From our log of the changes between model years, each with its source. Only changes the score reads count as reasons; recalls BMW fixes for free, options and tuning notes do not. The cost a year is for a car bought at five years old, or its own age if older, kept five years. How the score works.

The longer answer

Many owners rank it the best M3 to drive. It is also over twenty years old, and its known faults are expensive: rod bearings, VANOS and cracks where the rear subframe meets the floor.

The right car comes with receipts for all three.

What to look for
  • Receipts for rod bearings with the date and mileage, VANOS work and subframe reinforcement
  • A subframe inspection on a lift
  • A cold start with no knock or rattle
  • Valve clearance adjustments in the records
  • On SMG cars, clean shifts and a record of the hydraulic pump
What changed by year

What differs by model year is the bearing history of the early cars and the spec of the late ones.

  • Built February 12, 2001 to May 22, 2003: BMW found these cars' connecting rod bearings were not made to its standards and replaced them, with new engine software, under Service Action 422 (SI B11 04 04); dealers fixed a label with the code 422 to the door pillar. Check by VIN that it was done.
  • The 6-year, 100,000-mile engine warranty BMW gave the 2001 to 2003 cars has long run out, and no source shows later bearings are immune, so on any year ask for receipts for bearings replaced since, with the mileage.
  • Coupe and convertible were both sold from the 2001 model year, and every US SMG car has the same SMG II gearbox.
  • From September 2001 bi-xenon headlights; from March 2002 optional 19-inch wheels; from September 2002 DVD navigation in place of CD.
  • From March 2003 the facelift: new tail lights, and Mystic Blue and Silver Grey replaced Topaz Blue and Steel Grey; Laguna Seca Blue and Oxford Green ended in August 2004.
  • From December 2004, the 2005 and 2006 coupes could have the Competition Package, with its 19-inch wheels, quicker steering, bigger front brakes and the Interlagos Blue only it offered.

Holds value

  • Six-speed manual coupes
  • The Competition Package (2005 and 2006)
  • Laguna Seca Blue
  • Phoenix Yellow
  • Interlagos Blue and Imola Red paint
  • Low documented mileage
  • Bearings and subframe done with receipts
  • Original, unmodified cars

Hurts resale

  • SMG cars with a tired pump
  • High mileage with no bearing records
  • Subframe cracks
  • Accident history
  • Heavy modification
  • Convertibles for buyers who want the collector car

What to do next

The report already scores the spec and takes the records; this would add the build date and option codes from the VIN, and an originality check against the window sticker. Not built yet. Press it if you would use it, and we will build it.
