US cars got their own 240 hp engine, simpler than Europe's: a 3.0-liter for 1995 and a 3.2 from 1996.
It is the most affordable way into an M3 and, for its age, one of the easiest to keep running. Cooling parts, rear shock mounts and rust are the things to check.
What to look for. A cooling system refreshed within the last 60,000 miles, the rear shock mounts and the floor around the rear subframe checked for cracks, the rear arches and quarter panels checked for rust, no VANOS rattle, and a clear accident and modification history.

Inspect the rear shock mounts from the trunk and underneath, and listen for clunks over bumps.

The water pump, radiator, expansion tank, thermostat and fan clutch are plastic-heavy and fail with age, and an overheated engine can warp its cylinder head.
Look for a cooling system refresh in the records, watch the temperature gauge on a long drive, and check for coolant smell or residue.
The rear shock mounts are thin and crack, most often on lowered or hard-driven cars. The repair is reinforcement plates.

Rust shows up in the rockers, often hidden behind the plastic side skirts, and in the wheel arches, mostly on cars from snowy states.
Check the rockers, the wheel arch lips and the jacking points for bubbling paint or repairs, and look behind the side skirts.
The single VANOS unit wears, bringing a rattle and a loss of low-end power.
Listen for a rattle between 1,000 and 3,000 rpm, and look for VANOS work in the records.

IT IS POSSIBLE THAT THE PLASTIC BUSHING ON EITHER CABLE COULD BREAK DUE TO ENVIRONMENTAL INFLUENCES COUPLED WITH VIBRATION. IF THE BUSHING BREAKS, THE OUTER CABLE HOUSING CAN SEPARATE FROM THE BUSHING.
