Each part is scored from 0 to 100 on a fixed outside scale. Acclaim comes from published expert lists, launch reviews and awards; the more acclaimed a car, the less its ownership cost counts in this all-time score (its dollars below are unchanged). A part marked not measured carries no weight for this car, and the others share its weight.

Long-term value, shown and not scored

9 prices from sources that allow this use (bonhams.com, classiccars.com, enthusiastauto.com), read October 27, 2026: the middle one is $43,990, about 102% of the price new (51% once the price new is put in today's dollars). Asking prices sit above what cars sell for.

Long-term value starts to count in the score once 75% of the 69 generations have permitted prices. Today 43 do.

The cost to own

About $2,811 a year to own ($1,966 to $4,088), about $14,057 over five years, bought at five years old or its own age if older, kept five years.

  1. Rod bearing wear (S54): about $2,463 over five years, expected (source)
  2. Differential mount and trunk floor cracking: about $1,575 over five years, common (source)
  3. Rust (body repair, the era's price): about $805 over five years, common

Expect about $2,000 to $4,100 a year; the bills that decide it are rod bearing wear, differential mount and trunk floor cracking and rust. Bought without receipts, about a 2 in 20 chance of more than $10,000 in repairs in five years. Ownership risk: moderate.

Best year to buy

2000The best year to buy, reading 91 of 100, about $2,321 a year to own.

No logged change between model years sets it apart; every year reads within 2 points of it, so buy on condition and records.

No year to think twice about: none reads 3 or more points below the 2000, and no logged fault separates them.

From our log of the changes between model years, each with its source. Only changes the score reads count as reasons; recalls BMW fixes for free, options and tuning notes do not. The cost a year is for a car bought at five years old, or its own age if older, kept five years. How the score works.

The longer answer

Through 2000, US cars had the E36 M3's 240 hp S52; for 2001 and 2002 they got the E46 M3's S54 at 315 hp, and those are the rare ones: 678 S54 M Coupes were built for North America. BMW made no official special editions.

Before buying either body, have the differential mount and the trunk floor above it checked for cracks, the fault behind most owner complaints to NHTSA, and on 2001 and 2002 cars ask for rod bearing records.

What to look for. The differential mount and trunk floor inspected on a lift for cracks and pulled spot welds (or receipts for a welded reinforcement kit), rod bearing records on 2001 and 2002 cars, water pump and cooling system work in the last 60,000 miles, a cold start with no VANOS rattle, clunk-free rear shock mounts, the soft top's condition on roadsters, and a clean accident and modification history.

Holds value

  • The M Coupe body
  • The 2001 and 2002 S54 cars (above all S54 coupes)
  • Laguna Seca Blue
  • Phoenix Yellow
  • Estoril Blue
  • Dakar Yellow and Imola Red paint
  • Two-tone interiors (Kyalami Orange, Imola Red or Estoril Blue with black)
  • Low documented mileage
  • A reinforced differential mount with receipts
  • Original, unmodified cars

Hurts resale

  • Cracks at the differential mount or a torn trunk floor
  • S54 cars with no rod bearing records
  • Superchargers and other heavy modification
  • Accident or track history
  • High mileage with no records
  • A worn or leaking soft top
