M Buyers Guide
Inspection checklist
M Roadster and M Coupe E36/7, 1998 to 2002
Before you go
- Open recalls. Run the VIN through NHTSA or a BMW dealer and ask for proof every recall was done.
- History report. Check the title, accidents, owners and mileage record.
- Service records. Ask for them in advance, ideally from a BMW dealer or specialist.
- Independent inspection. Book a pre-purchase inspection with a shop that knows this engine.
Known problems on this car
- Differential mount and trunk floor cracking about $4,500 to fix
Have the car inspected on a lift for cracks at the corners of the differential mount and in the floor around it, lift the trunk carpet and check that the spot welds along the rear floor are flat and intact, listen for clunks from the rear when shifting in first and second, and ask whether a reinforcement kit has been fitted.
- Rod bearing wear 2001 and 2002 cars about $2,500 to fix
Ask for receipts showing when the rod bearings were replaced and at what mileage. Without them, budget for the job, and listen for a knock on a cold start.
- VANOS wear about $1,500 to fix
Listen for a rattle at idle and low rpm once the engine is warm, check for rough running or a check-engine light, and look for VANOS work in the records.
- Cooling system failure about $900 to fix
Look for a water pump and cooling system refresh in the records, watch the temperature gauge on a long drive, and check for coolant smell or dried residue around the hoses and tank.
- Rear shock mount bushings about $400 to fix
Drive over rough pavement with the radio off and listen for clunks from either rear corner, and ask whether the mounts have been replaced.
