Oil pump failure (B58, 2020 to 2021 cars)
The B58's variable oil pump has a plastic ring inside that can crack, most often on a cold start, and oil pressure then becomes erratic or is lost, which can ruin the engine. A BMW specialist, BRR Performance, puts it on engines built from 2018 to 2022, and BMW switched to a metal ring during 2022, so an early 2022 car can have the plastic part too. Federal complaints cluster on 2020 and 2021 B58 cars such as the X3 M40i; few Z4 owners file complaints, so the Z4's own rate is not known. RepairPal puts the job on a 2020 to 2023 Z4 at about $1,600 to $2,000.
How to check
Run the oil level check in iDrive. On 2020 and 2021 cars a check that stalls at 15 to 30 percent is usually a software fault BMW fixes with an update (SIB 11 04 26), so ask whether the update was done and, if the check still will not finish, have a BMW dealer or specialist check the oil pressure. Ask for an invoice if the pump has been replaced, and treat low oil pressure warnings in the history as a reason to walk away.
