Each part is scored from 0 to 100 on a fixed outside scale. Acclaim comes from published expert lists, launch reviews and awards; the more acclaimed a car, the less its ownership cost counts in this all-time score (its dollars below are unchanged). A part marked not measured carries no weight for this car, and the others share its weight. This car is held one point below its M twin, the F98 X4 M, by the site's twin rule.

Long-term value, shown and not scored

5 prices from sources that allow this use (driveway.com), read October 27, 2026: the middle one is $38,600, about 62% of the price new (51% once the price new is put in today's dollars). Asking prices sit above what cars sell for.

Long-term value starts to count in the score once 75% of the 69 generations have permitted prices. Today 43 do.

The cost to own

About $2,481 a year to own ($1,587 to $3,701), about $11,495 over five years, bought at five years old or its own age if older, kept five years.

  1. Oil pump failure (B58, 2020 to 2021 cars): about $910 over five years, common (source)
  2. Oil filter housing and valve cover gasket leaks (B58): about $516 over five years, common (source)
  3. Coolant loss (B58): about $59 over five years, possible (source)

Expect about $1,600 to $3,700 a year; the bills that decide it are oil pump failure, oil filter housing and valve cover gasket leaks and coolant loss. Ownership risk: moderate.

Best year to buy

2021The best year to buy, reading 63 of 100, about $2,355 a year to own.

Why the 2021

  • 2021 to 2025 cars: Revised oil pump (the ZTK part with metal internals) supersedes the plastic-housing pump that failed on early B58 TU cars (source, read October 27, 2026)
  • Spared a downgrade of the 2022 to 2025 cars: Facelift: 48V mild hybrid added to the M40i (source, read October 27, 2026)

Years to think twice about

  • 2022 to 2025: 62, 1 point below the 2021. Facelift: 48V mild hybrid added to the M40i. (source, read October 27, 2026) The same cost to own, about $2,355 a year; chance of a bill over $10,000 in five years under 0.1%.

From our log of the changes between model years, each with its source. Only changes the score reads count as reasons; recalls BMW fixes for free, options and tuning notes do not. The cost a year is for a car bought at five years old, or its own age if older, kept five years. How the score works.

The longer answer

It has the B58 3.0-liter turbo six, an eight-speed automatic and all-wheel drive, with 355 hp for 2019, 382 hp from 2020, and a 48-volt mild-hybrid system from the 2022 facelift.

New, it cost about $4,600 more than an X3 M40i (2022 prices), but used prices sit close to the X3's; the roof costs about an inch of rear headroom, and cargo space behind the rear seats drops from 28.7 to 18.5 cubic feet.

The engine oil pump on 2020 and 2021 cars is the expensive known fault; also check the oil filter housing for leaks and, on 2019 cars, whether the crankcase valve is covered by BMW's 15-year warranty. A car up to five years old with under 60,000 miles can be sold as BMW Certified.

What to look for
  • A VIN check for open recalls (the brake assist software update on 2020 and 2021 cars and the rear brake caliper recall on 2019 cars), an electronic oil level check in iDrive that completes (on 2020 and 2021 cars one that stalls at 15 to 30 percent is usually a software fault BMW fixes with an update, SIB 11 04 26; if it still will not finish, have the oil pressure checked), any record of oil pump replacement, no low oil pressure or drivetrain warnings in the history, no low-coolant warnings or dried coolant around the expansion tank, no oil weeping at the valve cover or oil filter housing, rear headroom that suits your passengers, oil changes on time, and how much factory or BMW Certified warranty is left
  • BMW covers the EVAP purge valve for 15 years or 150,000 miles if it fails (SI B01 03 24); a dealer confirms the cover by VIN
  • On 2019 cars, BMW's 15-year, 150,000-mile covers also take in the fuel vapor leak diagnosis module (SI B01 09 21) and the grille's active air flaps (SI B01 12 19)

Holds value

  • 2022 to 2025 cars with warranty or BMW Certified cover left
  • The M Sport Differential
  • Tanzanite Blue II
  • Phytonic Blue
  • Aventurin Red and Flamenco Red paint
  • Tacora Red or Cognac leather
  • The Premium Package
  • Low documented mileage
  • Unmodified cars

Hurts resale

  • 2020 and 2021 cars with no record of oil pump work
  • High mileage with gaps in the service history
  • Accident history
  • Tuning
  • Open recalls
  • Worn tires and brakes
