It has the B58 3.0-liter turbo six, an eight-speed automatic and all-wheel drive, with 355 hp for 2019, 382 hp from 2020, and a 48-volt mild-hybrid system from the 2022 facelift.
New, it cost about $4,600 more than an X3 M40i (2022 prices), but used prices sit close to the X3's; the roof costs about an inch of rear headroom, and cargo space behind the rear seats drops from 28.7 to 18.5 cubic feet.
The engine oil pump on 2020 and 2021 cars is the expensive known fault; also check the oil filter housing for leaks and, on 2019 cars, whether the crankcase valve is covered by BMW's 15-year warranty. A car up to five years old with under 60,000 miles can be sold as BMW Certified.

Certain 2020 and 2021 X4 M40is were recalled (NHTSA 21V598000) because the engine software could cut brake assist while the engine starts. The brakes still work but need a much harder push. Dealers update the software free of charge.
On a 2020 or 2021 car, run the VIN through NHTSA or a BMW dealer and ask for proof the update was done.
The B58's coolant expansion tank can crack at its seams, and hoses and fittings around the engine can seep, so the loss is often slow: a low-coolant warning now and then. RepairPal puts a new tank on the sister X3 at about $460 to $520.

The plastic oil filter housing and its gaskets can leak oil or coolant, often from about 60,000 miles, and the valve cover gasket can weep. A proposed class action filed in January 2026 covers 2014 to 2021 X3s and X4s among other BMWs with this engine family (2019 to 2021 X4s are in the proposed class); BMW has moved to dismiss it, and no class has been certified. Both jobs take many hours of labor.
Look for oil or coolant residue at the oil filter housing and the valve cover, and ask about coolant top-ups.
The crankcase ventilation (PCV) valve's diaphragm can split, bringing blue-white smoke after a cold start, a whistle at idle and cylinder 6 misfire codes. BMW covers the valve for 15 years or 150,000 miles on X4 M40is built January 2018 to July 2019 (SI B01 14 23).
Ask whether the valve was replaced under SI B01 14 23; within 15 years and 150,000 miles a BMW dealer fixes it free.
The B58's variable oil pump has a plastic ring inside that can crack, and oil pressure then becomes erratic or is lost, which can ruin the engine. BMW specialist BRR Performance says it affects the updated engine (B58TU) built from 2018 to 2022, most often after extreme cold or with oil thicker than the specified 0W-20, that BMW moved to a metal ring in 2022 engines, so an early 2022 car can have the plastic part, and that the first version of the engine, which BMW lists for the 2019 X4 M40i, does not seem to fail this way. The X4 shares the X3 M40i's engine, whose federal complaints cluster on 2020 and 2021 cars; one 2021 X4 owner reported the failure at 65,000 miles. RepairPal puts the job on the sister X3 at about $2,100 to $2,800 at an independent shop.
Run the oil level check in iDrive. On 2020 and 2021 cars a check that stalls at 15 to 30 percent is usually a software fault BMW fixes with an update (SIB 11 04 26), so ask whether the update was done and, if the check still will not finish, have a BMW dealer or specialist check the oil pressure. Ask for an invoice if the pump has been replaced, and treat low oil pressure warnings in the history as a reason to walk away.
