The short answer

The F98 is the first X4 M: the X3 M's running gear under a sloping coupe roof, built in South Carolina and sold here from 2020 to 2025, a year longer than the X3 M.

Each part is scored from 0 to 100 on a fixed outside scale. Acclaim comes from published expert lists, launch reviews and awards; the more acclaimed a car, the less its ownership cost counts in this all-time score (its dollars below are unchanged). A part marked not measured carries no weight for this car, and the others share its weight.

Long-term value, shown and not scored

3 prices from sources that allow this use (classiccars.com, driveway.com), read October 27, 2026: the middle one is $70,700, about 96% of the price new (79% once the price new is put in today's dollars). Asking prices sit above what cars sell for.

Long-term value starts to count in the score once 75% of the 69 generations have permitted prices. Today 43 do.

The cost to own

About $3,269 a year to own ($1,905 to $5,029), about $14,797 over five years, bought at five years old or its own age if older, kept five years.

  1. Rear differential mounting bolt: about $84 over five years, possible (source)
  2. Coolant leaks (S58): about $33 over five years, possible (source)
  3. Carbon buildup on the intake valves (S58): about $20 over five years, possible (source)

Expect about $1,900 to $5,000 a year; the bill that decides it is rear differential mounting bolt. Ownership risk: moderate.

Best year to buy

2020The best year to buy, reading 64 of 100, about $3,270 a year to own.

No logged change between model years sets it apart; every year reads within 2 points of it, so buy on condition and records.

No year to think twice about: none reads 3 or more points below the 2020, and no logged fault separates them.

From our log of the changes between model years, each with its source. Only changes the score reads count as reasons; recalls BMW fixes for free, options and tuning notes do not. The cost a year is for a car bought at five years old, or its own age if older, kept five years. How the score works.

The longer answer

It has the same twin-turbo S58 six with 473 hp, or 503 hp as the Competition; the 2022 update brought new lights and bumpers and raised torque from 442 lb-ft to 457 (479 for the Competition).

Every one has an eight-speed automatic and rear-biased all-wheel drive, and the roof costs about 1.5 inches of rear headroom and about a third of the X3 M's cargo space with the rear seats up. The engine has a good record so far.

The weak spot owners report is the bolt that holds the rear differential, which can bend or break after a clunk from the rear, even on stock cars (no recall or BMW bulletin covers it); the costliest fault to budget for is transfer case shudder, which BMW's bulletin SIB 27 02 20 lists for the X4 M and treats first with an oil change, while replacing the case runs $7,000 to $13,000 on BMW's other xDrive models in a class action that leaves the M cars out.

Values fall a little faster than the X3 M's, about 53% in five years by iSeeCars' 2025 figures.

What to look for
  • A VIN check for open recalls (the 2020 steering tie rod recall above all; others cover seat belt sensors and seat frames on 2020 and 2021 cars and, on 2025 cars, a roof frame crack near the head air bag), no clunk from the rear when shifting into drive or reverse or on and off the throttle at low speed, a record of the rear differential bolt being replaced or upgraded, no low-coolant warnings or white exhaust smoke, a clean fault-code scan, tread and brake life left, and proof the car has not been tuned
  • Cars up to five model years old with under 60,000 miles can be sold as BMW Certified, with a year of unlimited-mile cover after the 4-year, 50,000-mile factory warranty

Holds value

  • The Competition Package
  • 2022 and later cars with the update and the extra torque
  • Sao Paulo Yellow
  • Marina Bay Blue and Toronto Red paint
  • Sakhir Orange leather
  • The M Carbon exterior package with its carbon rear spoiler
  • The Executive Package
  • Low documented mileage
  • Unmodified cars with the differential bolt fix on record

Hurts resale

  • Tunes and other modifications
  • A clunking rear differential
  • Accident history
  • High mileage
  • Missing records
  • The 473 hp base car for buyers who want the Competition
