Each part is scored from 0 to 100 on a fixed outside scale. Acclaim comes from published expert lists, launch reviews and awards; the more acclaimed a car, the less its ownership cost counts in this all-time score (its dollars below are unchanged). A part marked not measured carries no weight for this car, and the others share its weight.

Long-term value, shown and not scored

6 prices from sources that allow this use (driveway.com), read October 27, 2026: the middle one is $90,449, about 71% of the price new (65% once the price new is put in today's dollars). Asking prices sit above what cars sell for.

Long-term value starts to count in the score once 75% of the 69 generations have permitted prices. Today 43 do.

The cost to own

About $4,172 a year to own ($2,508 to $6,322), about $19,646 over five years, bought at five years old or its own age if older, kept five years.

  1. Oil and coolant leaks around the hot vee: about $840 over five years, common (source)
  2. Carbon buildup on the intake valves: about $96 over five years, possible (source)

Expect about $2,500 to $6,300 a year; the bills that decide it are oil and coolant leaks around the hot vee and carbon buildup on the intake valves. Ownership risk: costly.

From our log of the changes between model years, each with its source. Only changes the score reads count as reasons; recalls BMW fixes for free, options and tuning notes do not. The cost a year is for a car bought at five years old, or its own age if older, kept five years. How the score works.

The longer answer

Through 2023 it used the 4.4-liter twin-turbo S63 V8 with 600 hp, or 617 hp as the Competition; for 2024 it got a new face, the curved-screen dashboard and a new S68 V8 with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, and the US got only the 617 hp Competition.

Every one has an eight-speed automatic and all-wheel drive, and the roof costs about 2 inches of rear headroom and about a fifth of the X5 M's cargo space. It loses value fast, about 56% in five years by iSeeCars' 2025 figures, while running costs stay at new-car levels, so a car with factory warranty left or one sold as BMW Certified is the safer buy.

What to look for
  • A VIN check for open recalls (on 2020 cars the rear spoiler bonding and steering column recalls, on 2020 and 2021 cars the brake unit recall, on 2023 cars the transmission control unit recall), a complete service history with oil changes on time or sooner, no oil or coolant leaks around the top of the engine, a clean fault-code scan, tread and brake life left, and how much of the 4-year, 50,000-mile factory warranty remains
  • BMW Certified cars (up to five model years old, under 60,000 miles) add a year of unlimited-mile cover after it ends

Holds value

  • The 2024 and later Competition with warranty left
  • BMW Certified cars
  • Isle of Man Green
  • Marina Bay Blue
  • Ametrin (BMW Individual)
  • Frozen Pure Grey and Toronto Red paint
  • Sakhir Orange or Taruma Brown Full Merino leather
  • The Executive Package
  • Bowers & Wilkins sound
  • Low documented mileage
  • Unmodified cars

Hurts resale

  • High mileage
  • Accident history
  • Missing service records
  • Open recalls
  • Tires and brakes due soon
  • Aftermarket tunes
  • The 600 hp base car for buyers who want the Competition
