Each part is scored from 0 to 100 on a fixed outside scale. Acclaim comes from published expert lists, launch reviews and awards; the more acclaimed a car, the less its ownership cost counts in this all-time score (its dollars below are unchanged). A part marked not measured carries no weight for this car, and the others share its weight.

Long-term value, shown and not scored

5 prices from sources that allow this use (classiccars.com, driveway.com), read October 27, 2026: the middle one is $72,444, about 70% of the price new (55% once the price new is put in today's dollars). Asking prices sit above what cars sell for.

Long-term value starts to count in the score once 75% of the 69 generations have permitted prices. Today 43 do.

The cost to own

About $3,231 a year to own ($2,100 to $4,976), about $15,182 over five years, bought at five years old or its own age if older, kept five years.

  1. Rod bearing wear (S63): about $608 over five years, rare (source)
  2. Carbon buildup (direct injection): about $280 over five years, common (source)
  3. Transfer case / xDrive components: about $74 over five years, possible (source)

Expect about $2,100 to $5,000 a year; the bills that decide it are rod bearing wear, carbon buildup and transfer case / xDrive components. Ownership risk: moderate.

Best year to buy

2023The best year to buy, reading 81 of 100, about $3,231 a year to own.

The 2022 reads 82, a point higher on this scale; the model scores the two years level and names the 2023 as the year to buy.

No logged change between model years sets it apart; every year reads within 2 points of it, so buy on condition and records.

No year to think twice about: none reads 3 or more points below the 2023, and no logged fault separates them.

From our log of the changes between model years, each with its source. Only changes the score reads count as reasons; recalls BMW fixes for free, options and tuning notes do not. The cost a year is for a car bought at five years old, or its own age if older, kept five years. How the score works.

The longer answer

It is the first M5 with M xDrive all-wheel drive, including a pure RWD mode, paired exclusively with an 8-speed ZF automatic.

The 2022 M5 CS, a one-year 627 hp special best known in Frozen Deep Green, is the collectible halo. A very fast, usable super sedan that is now a strong used value, except for the CS.

What to look for
  • Full service history, cooling and xDrive health, tune clarity, clean accident record, and desirable specs and colors
  • Decide between a value Competition and a premium CS
  • Confirm Competition package contents if value depends on it
  • Check by VIN that recalls and BMW's coolant expansion tank campaign (SIB 17 03 24) are done; cars built from December 2017 to July 1, 2021 have 15-year, 150,000-mile cover for injectors damaged by coolant (SI B01 17 24; BMW confirms eligibility by VIN)
  • For 2019 and 2020 the M5 Competition was its own model; from 2021 it was a package

Holds value

  • M5 CS (Frozen Deep Green hero, strong value retention)
  • Competition Package
  • Carbon ceramic brakes
  • Signature colors like Marina Bay Blue, BMW Individual San Remo Green, and Frozen finishes
  • BMW Individual interiors such as Tartufo, Smoke White/Black, and Caramel/Black
  • Aragon Brown Full Merino
  • Low documented mileage
  • Full records

Hurts resale

  • High mileage
  • Accident or salvage history
  • Undocumented heavy tuning
  • Common colors
  • Missing records
  • Unresolved cooling or xDrive issues
