Carbon buildup (direct injection)
Intake valve carbon accumulates over mileage; walnut blasting eventually needed.
How to check
Ask about mileage and whether walnut blasting has been performed.

The F10 is the fifth-gen M5, sold in the US as 2013 to 2016 models, and the first turbocharged M5, powered by the 4.4L twin-turbo S63 V8 at 560 hp (around 575 in Competition).
Each part is scored from 0 to 100 on a fixed outside scale. Acclaim comes from published expert lists, launch reviews and awards; the more acclaimed a car, the less its ownership cost counts in this all-time score (its dollars below are unchanged). A part marked not measured carries no weight for this car, and the others share its weight.
No permitted price yet: we have not found three prices for this car from sources that allow this use.
Long-term value starts to count in the score once 75% of the 69 generations have permitted prices. Today 43 do.
About $3,125 a year to own ($1,962 to $4,895), about $15,004 over five years, bought at five years old or its own age if older, kept five years.
Expect about $2,000 to $4,900 a year; the bills that decide it are rod bearing wear, fuel injectors and high-pressure fuel pumps and carbon buildup. Ownership risk: moderate.

2013The best year to buy, reading 70 of 100, about $3,125 a year to own.
No logged change between model years sets it apart; every year reads within 2 points of it, so buy on condition and records.
No year to think twice about: none reads 3 or more points below the 2013, and no logged fault separates them.
From our log of the changes between model years, each with its source. Only changes the score reads count as reasons; recalls BMW fixes for free, options and tuning notes do not. The cost a year is for a car bought at five years old, or its own age if older, kept five years. How the score works.
It is the last M5 offered with a manual, sold only in North America, with just 577 built, which makes manual cars collectible.
A refined and very fast grand-touring sedan, but its S63TU needs careful maintenance: BMW extended the warranty on its fuel injectors and high-pressure fuel pumps and replaced leaking turbo coolant lines under a service action, and many owners replace the rod bearings as a precaution.
What goes wrong on this generation, roughly what a fix costs at an independent shop, and how to spot it before you buy. Every M5 generation compared.
Ask whether rod bearings have been replaced, review oil analysis, and factor in tune and driving style.
Ask for injector and pump history and scan for misfire and fuel pressure faults.
Ask about mileage and whether walnut blasting has been performed.
Listen for rattle on cold start and review service history for timing work.

The S63TU's rod bearings are a known worry, above all on tuned or hard-driven cars; many owners replace them as a precaution. BMW has issued no bulletin.
If a bearing spins: a used S63 is $8k to $10k before fitting ($15k to $16k for the F90 M5's). Source: used-engine asking prices on eBay, October 18, 2026.

Timing chain and VANOS wear can come with age and high mileage, but no BMW bulletin or failure pattern covers this engine.

The twin-turbo V8 runs hot; water pump, thermostat, and coolant lines age out.
Check records for cooling work and monitor temperatures during the test drive. Confirm the turbo coolant line service action (SI B11 08 17) was done.
BMW extended the warranty on the fuel injectors of cars built through January 2015 and the high-pressure fuel pumps of cars built through June 2014 to 10 years or 120,000 miles from first sale; that cover has now run out on almost every car. Symptoms are hard starting, rough running and misfires.
Ask for injector and pump history and scan for misfire and fuel pressure faults.
