Rod bearing wear (S85)
The S85's rod bearings wear early, which specialists blame on tight factory clearances for an engine that revs this high. Many owners replace them every 60,000 to 80,000 miles, and a failure costs an engine.
If a bearing spins: a used S85 is $6k to $10k before fitting, or a specialist rebuild $24,995, removal and fitting extra. Source: CarBahn, which sells the rebuild; used-engine asking prices on eBay, October 18, 2026.
How to check
Ask for receipts showing when the bearings were replaced and at what mileage. Without them, budget for the job, and listen for a knock.
