M Buyers Guide
Inspection checklist
M5 G90 / G99, 2025 to 2027
Before you go
- Open recalls. Run the VIN through NHTSA or a BMW dealer and ask for proof every recall was done.
- History report. Check the title, accidents, owners and mileage record.
- Service records. Ask for them in advance, ideally from a BMW dealer or specialist.
- Certified or not. BMW can still certify 2025 to 2027 cars. If this one is certified, ask for the paperwork showing when its cover ends.
- Independent inspection. Book a pre-purchase inspection with a shop that knows this engine.
Known problems on this car
- Hybrid drive faults and false warning lights
Ask a BMW dealer to confirm the software level and scan for stored hybrid and charging faults, drive the car in electric and hybrid modes, and charge it on a Level 2 charger before you buy.
- Carbon buildup on the intake valves about $1,000 to fix
Listen for a rough idle and scan for misfire codes, and on higher-mileage cars ask whether the valves have been cleaned.
At the viewing
- A VIN check for the air conditioning wiring recall.
- The integrated brake unit recall on a few cars built in July 2024.
- For any open campaigns.
- Proof the software is at BMW's current level (BMW's fix for hybrid no-starts and drivetrain warnings is a software update).
- No stored hybrid or charging fault codes.
- A charge on a Level 2 charger to see it accepts power.
- Tread and brake life left.
- How much of the 4-year.
- 50,000-mile warranty and the 8-year high-voltage battery warranty remains.
- Proof the car has not been tuned.
Recalls to confirm
- Air conditioning wiring harness recall 2025 and 2026 cars
Run the VIN through NHTSA or a BMW dealer, and have the recall done before anyone changes the cabin filter.
