Through 2023 it used the 4.4-liter twin-turbo S63 V8 with 600 hp, or 617 hp as the Competition; for 2024 it got a new face, the curved-screen dashboard and a new S68 V8 with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, and the US got only the 617 hp Competition.
Every one has an eight-speed automatic and all-wheel drive. It loses value fast, about 56% in five years by iSeeCars' 2025 figures, so a five-year-old car costs about half its sticker price while its running costs stay the same. A car with factory warranty left, or one sold as BMW Certified, is the safer buy.

Certain 2020 and 2021 cars were recalled (NHTSA 21V062000) because a weld inside the integrated brake unit could separate under hard braking, cutting ABS and brake assist. Dealers replace the unit free of charge.

Certain 2023 cars were recalled (NHTSA 23V821000) because the cover of the transmission control unit may not be sealed properly, letting transmission oil in, which can seize the gearbox and cut drive power. Dealers replace the mechatronics unit and fluid as needed, free of charge.

BMW issued a service bulletin in 2022 (SIB 17 02 22) for coolant leaking from the S63's expansion tank on the X5 M and X6 M, blamed on the tank's plastic reacting with the coolant. A low-coolant warning is the usual sign; the fix is a new tank and fresh coolant.
Look for coolant under the car and low-coolant warnings in the history, and ask whether the tank has been replaced.
Early 2024 cars built from March to July 2023 were recalled (NHTSA 24V104000, then 24V739000) for the integrated brake module. Dealers replace it free of charge.

The turbochargers sit inside the V of the engine, and years of heat harden the gaskets, oil and coolant lines and plastic cooling parts around them. Repairs run from about $1,500 for gaskets to several thousand dollars for turbo oil or coolant lines, which mean removing the intake and often the turbos.

Like any direct-injection engine, these V8s can build carbon on the intake valves at high mileage; it is documented on the related N63 but not yet reported on these cars. Walnut blasting cleans it off.
Listen for a rough idle and scan for misfire codes, and ask whether the valves have been cleaned on higher-mileage cars.
A heavy SUV with this much power goes through its staggered 21 and 22-inch tires and M Compound brakes quickly, and both are expensive: a tire set costs about $2,400 to $3,000 and a full brake job $2,000 to $3,500.
Check tread depth and the tire date codes, look for a worn lip on the rotors, and ask when pads and rotors were last replaced.
