M Buyers Guide
Inspection checklist
M235i F22, 2014 to 2016
Before you go
- Open recalls. Run the VIN through NHTSA or a BMW dealer and ask for proof every recall was done.
- History report. Check the title, accidents, owners and mileage record.
- Service records. Ask for them in advance, ideally from a BMW dealer or specialist.
- Independent inspection. Book a pre-purchase inspection with a shop that knows this engine.
Known problems on this car
- Electric water pump and thermostat failure about $1,500 to fix
Look for a water pump and thermostat replacement in the records, and treat an original pump on a car past about 70,000 miles as due. Check for coolant warnings in the history.
- Oil filter housing gasket leak about $600 to fix
Look at the housing, on the intake side of the engine, and the drive belt below it for oil. A shiny or oil-soaked belt means fix the gasket and replace the belt before driving on.
- Valve cover and oil pan gasket leaks about $1,300 to fix
Look for oil along the valve cover edge and burning-oil smells after a drive, and have the underside checked on a lift for oil at the pan.
- Charge pipe cracking about $450 to fix
Ask whether a stronger aftermarket charge pipe has been fitted, and on a test drive check for a sudden loss of power at full throttle.
- Fuel tank leak about $1,750 to fix
Look under the car on the driver's side for wet fuel or staining, sniff for fuel after a fill-up, and scan for fuel tank leak codes. A BMW dealer can confirm by VIN whether the 15-year cover applies.
At the viewing
- Records for the electric water pump and thermostat.
- A dry oil filter housing.
- Valve cover and oil pan (a shiny, oil-soaked drive belt means stop and fix it).
- A stronger aftermarket charge pipe or a crack-free original.
- No coolant smell or low-coolant warnings.
- Oil changes every 5,000 to 7,500 miles rather than BMW's 10,000.
- The tune history (many N55s have been tuned).
- A receipt for any M Performance limited-slip differential.
- A VIN check for open recalls (a fuel pump recall on early 2014 cars and two head air bag recalls on some 2014 and 2015 coupes).
- No wet fuel or fuel smell under the driver's side.
- Where the tank's welded top plate can leak (BMW covers it for 15 years).
- On manual cars a clutch that does not slip.
