Inspection checklist

M3 E92, 2008 to 2013

Printed October 29, 2026. Tick each item at the viewing, and write down what you find.

Before you go

  • Open recalls. Run the VIN through NHTSA or a BMW dealer and ask for proof every recall was done.
  • History report. Check the title, accidents, owners and mileage record.
  • Service records. Ask for them in advance, ideally from a BMW dealer or specialist.
  • Independent inspection. Book a pre-purchase inspection with a shop that knows this engine.

Known problems on this car

  • Throttle actuator failure about $1,200 to fix

Check for an engine warning light and a smooth throttle all the way to the redline, and look for actuator work in the records.

  • Cooling system aging about $1,000 to fix

Look for a cooling system refresh in the records, and check for coolant smell or dried residue around the hoses and tank.

  • M DCT mechatronic unit about $5,000 to fix

On DCT cars, check smooth pull-aways and quick, clean shifts, and look for fluid service in the records. On a 2008 or 2009 car, also slow to walking pace as if for a turn, then accelerate: the car should pull away without a pause.

  • Rod bearing wear about $3,000 to fix

Ask for receipts showing when the bearings were replaced and at what mileage. Without them, budget for the job, and listen for a tick or knock at idle.

At the viewing

Receipts for rod bearings with the date and mileage, throttle actuator work, a cold start with no knock, service on time, and on DCT cars smooth pull-aways, including from a rolling stop, and records of fluid service. Check by VIN that the battery cable recall (19V-472, 2008 to 2012 cars) was done.

Recalls to confirm

  • Battery cable recall 2008 to 2012 cars

Run the VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup or a BMW dealer and ask for proof the connector was replaced, and ask whether the car has ever cut out, flickered its gauges or refused to start.
