Inspection checklist

Z4 M E85, 2006 to 2008

Before you go

  • Open recalls. Run the VIN through NHTSA or a BMW dealer and ask for proof every recall was done.
  • History report. Check the title, accidents, owners and mileage record.
  • Service records. Ask for them in advance, ideally from a BMW dealer or specialist.
  • Independent inspection. Book a pre-purchase inspection with a shop that knows this engine.

Known problems on this car

  • Rod bearing wear about $2,500 to fix

    Ask for receipts showing when the rod bearings were replaced and at what mileage, or at least recent oil analysis. Without them, budget for the job, and listen for a knock on a cold start.

  • VANOS wear about $2,000 to fix

    Listen for a rattle at idle and low rpm once the engine is warm, check for rough running or a check-engine light, and look for VANOS work in the records.

  • Power top hydraulics about $1,400 to fix

    Cycle the top several times, watching for slow or uneven movement and listening for a laboring pump, look for hydraulic fluid on the top's hinges and frame, and ask whether the pump has been replaced or moved into the trunk.

  • Cooling system aging about $1,000 to fix

    Look for a cooling system refresh in the records, watch the temperature gauge on a long drive, and check for coolant smell or dried residue around the hoses and tank.

  • Broken coil springs about $700 to fix

    Check that the car sits level, look at each spring for a broken end coil, and listen for clunks over bumps.

At the viewing

  • Rod bearing receipts (or at least oil analysis) on higher-mileage cars.
  • VANOS work in the records.
  • Valve clearance adjustments at each BMW inspection.
  • A power top that opens and closes smoothly with no hydraulic fluid on its hinges on roadsters.
  • A cooling system refresh.
  • Broken coil springs or worn suspension bushings.
  • A clean accident and modification history.
