Is the N74 reliable?
We rate the N74 60 of 100 for reliability: moderate. The rating is one of the inputs to every Guide Score below, and it is argued for on the method page with the others.
Why that rating
The lit mark is the N74; each grey mark is another engine on the engines page.
BMW's twin-turbo V12, used here in its updated 6.6-liter form in the 2017 to 2022 M760i.
The M760i's own record is thin and shows no engine pattern: one recall for a wrong oil cooler line on 206 early cars and no V12 complaints at NHTSA, while the earlier N74 in the 760Li is known for worn turbo wastegates and failed high-pressure fuel pumps.
Scored on that family history and on the cost of twelve-cylinder parts and labor, below the N63, until the M760i has a longer record.
Cars in this guide with the N74
| Car | Years with this engine | Reliability | Guide Score |
|---|---|---|---|
| M760i G12 | 2017 to 2022 | 62 to 65 | 56 (2022) |
Reliability is each car's score out of 100 for the years it had this engine: the engine rating plus that car's own known problems, service costs and age. The Guide Score is for the car's best year to buy.
Known problems on the N74
| Problem | Named in the guides for | Typical bill |
|---|---|---|
| Turbocharger wastegate wear | M760i G12 | $5,000 |
Bills are the guides' estimates, not quotes; each car's guide says which model years a problem hits and how to check for it. The bars share one scale, up to the costliest bill here.
